Today is World Environment Day, a day designated by the United Nations as a day to raise awareness around the importance of protecting and improving our environment. First held in the United States in 1974, this campaign has grown to a global platform celebrated in over 100 countries. This year, China is the host country and the theme is Air Pollution.
The World Health Organization estimates that around 7 million people die every year from exposure to fine particles in polluted air that penetrate deep into the lungs and cardiovascular system, causing diseases including stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and respiratory infections, including pneumonia.
By identifying the main sources of air pollution, we are better able to take steps to improve the quality of the air that we breathe every day and thus making our Earth a healthier place to live.
The main human sources of air pollution are: Agriculture, Household, Industry, Transport, and Waste. Here are some ways that we can take small steps to reduce air pollution…
