BE KIND to the Earth

Here at Wesley Enhanced Living, we have cultivated a culture where Kindness, Compassion, and Respect are at the core of everything we do. Our BE KIND initiative takes a closer look at different ways one can Be Kind. Each quarter of this year, we will focus on a different way to Be Kind. We will share information about what we are doing internally to spread Kindness.

This quarter we are focusing on how you can Be Kind to the Earth. This includes being kind and considerate of the various lifeforms that also live on our planet. We are collecting “Wands for Wildlife” this quarter to donate old mascara wands to a wildlife refuge in North Carolina to be used to remove fly eggs and larva from the fur of animals. Each of our communities is a donation site so please wash off your used wands and drop them off in the lobby of any Wesley Enhanced Living location and help us save wild lives. This is a small way we can give back to the furry creatures that need our help.

Here are other ways you can Be Kind to the Earth…

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

While efforts are continually being made to harness the power of renewable energy on a large scale, each of us can make a difference in our small part of the world. It starts with reducing, reusing, and recycling items we use in our everyday life. Here are some tips you can implement today to Be Kind to the Earth:

  • Reduce – Reducing your impact on the environment begins with observing how you utilize items.
    • Buy used. Shop consignment stores, thrift shops, and building material reuse centers. You can often save money while saving the environment. Donating to items to those in need is also a great way to be kind.
    • Buy in bulk. Smaller quantity items use more packaging which means more raw materials must be harvested to meet demand. Bulk buying lessens this impact.
    • Maintain your belongings. Take care of and repair your clothing, tires, and appliances. They will last longer and thereby, not wind up in a landfill as quickly.
  • Reuse – Reusing items also lowers the effect on the earth.
    • Bring your own silverware. When you pack your lunch for work, remember to add your silverware so you do not have to use disposable plastic.
    • Make borrowing commonplace. For those items you do not use frequently, see if you can borrow or rent them — for example, party decorations or tools.
    • Learn to upcycle. You can find a variety of uses for some of your belongings. Check out social media sites like Pinterest for inspiration. For instance, turn an old, worn out t-shirt into a reusable grocery bag.
  • Recycle – Your place of employment may already have a recycling program in place, so be sure to take advantage of the opportunity. The most common household items include:
    • Paper – Probably the most common thing to recycle; check with your community’s program office to see what is accepted.
    • Batteries – Many stores offer a collection bin for your dry-cell batteries. Find a place in your home to gather the used ones and take them with you the next time you are out.
    • Plastics – Plastic pollution has become an epidemic. Recycle as much of the different types as your community’s program takes, and look for ways to avoid those not easily recycled.

Join us in making the world a better place by spreading kindness everywhere you go.
